For the first time, the Indian government has formally acknowledged a covert Army operation carried out along the Indo-Myanmar Border in July 2025. The citation outlines a cross-border action along the border between July 11 and 13, a rare instance of official disclosure of such an operation.

Notably, the disclosure comes through a Shaurya Chakra citation awarded to Lieutenant Colonel Ghatage Aditya Shrikumar of the 21 Para (Special Forces for planning and personally leading the precision strike.

The Shaurya Chakra is India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award after the Ashoka Chakra and the Kirti Chakra.

The Shaurya Chakra Citation

According to the citation, the military operation led to the elimination of nine armed cadres, including senior leaders of a notorious anti-national group. The terrorist organisation alleged that the Indian Army targeted its mobile camps.

A drone attack on the eastern headquarters of the banned insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in Myanmar was reported in July last year, however, the Indian Army denied any role in the strikes.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state police were not involved in any such operation.

The anti-talks Ulfa (I) faction sought to establish a sovereign Assam through armed struggle and operates from multiple mobile camps in Myanmar, along the 1,600-kilometre border with India.

The Army, in its Shaurya Chakra citation, did not reveal details of the operation, but mentioned that the attacks targeted camps of an anti-national group.
