The Goa government on Monday launched the Majhe Driver App, a digital platform designed to enable commuters to book the state's iconic motorcycle taxis, locally known as "pilots." The initiative has been developed in collaboration with the Goa Motorcycle Taxi-Riders Association, the Directorate of Transport, and Graceful Goa Superapp Pvt. Ltd.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who launched the app, said the platform aims to improve connectivity between commuters and motorcycle taxi riders while creating additional business opportunities for operators. According to the government, the app will not charge riders any commission on bookings.
"The purpose of the app is to help the commuter connect with the taxi rider and book a ride before arriving at the destination. Beyond that, there will be no commission charged by the app," Sawant said during the launch. He added that joining the platform would remain voluntary for motorcycle taxi operators.
Goa is among the few Indian states where motorcycle taxi services operate legally. The state recognised the services through an amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act in 1981, formalising a mode of transport that had existed since the Portuguese era. Motorcycle taxi operators are commonly referred to as "pilots," a term derived from the Portuguese word piloto, meaning "driver."
The government said the app has been introduced to strengthen last-mile connectivity while helping riders adapt to digital booking systems. Officials noted that many motorcycle taxi operators have experienced declining earnings and reduced demand, particularly on rural routes.
According to the developers, the Majhe Driver App will allow commuters to book motorcycle taxis from anywhere in Goa, expanding the customer base for riders beyond traditional taxi stands. The platform is also intended to improve accessibility and streamline service delivery through technology.
Rebekah Lobo, Director of Graceful Goa Superapp Pvt. Ltd., said the initiative is expected to enhance business opportunities for motorcycle taxi operators and support the sector's long-term growth. She added that future plans include facilitating the transition from conventional motorcycles to electric two-wheelers as part of broader sustainable mobility efforts.
Officials estimate that Goa currently has between 2,500 and 3,000 active motorcycle taxi riders, down from approximately 8,000 to 10,000 at the turn of the century.
During the event, Chief Minister Sawant also announced a 50% subsidy for existing motorcycle taxi riders to purchase electric bikes, a move aimed at encouraging the adoption of cleaner transportation while reducing operating costs.
