One girl died and another was injured when the balcony of an under-construction school collapsed in Pathar Padi village in Rajasthan's Udaipur, officials said on Friday. According to police, the girls were passing near the school when the accident occurred.
The injured girl's family took her to Gujarat for treatment. Villagers have blamed poor construction quality for the tragedy, raising concerns over safety standards at the site.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
In a similar incident, seven students were killed and over 15 were injured after a portion of a government school building collapsed in Jhalawar last month. The incident occurred while the children were attending classes.
A massive rescue operation was carried out at Piplodi Primary School after its roof collapsed, trapping several students under debris. Police, local residents, and officials rushed to the site to assist. The 20-year-old building's stone slab roof intensified the impact. The victims, all Class 7 students, were aged between 12 and 14.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma had called the incident “tragic and heartbreaking” and directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured. He added, "May God grant the departed souls peace and give strength to the bereaved families to bear this immense sorrow".
Even Education Minister Madan Dilawar had announced that a high-level inquiry into the collapse would be launched.
