Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader George Kurian resigned on Tuesday from his position as Minister of State (MoS) for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying after the end of his Rajya Sabha term. The President of India accepted his resignation, according to a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
“The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Shri George Kurian from the Union Council of Ministers, with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution,” the statement said.
Kurian’s six-year Rajya Sabha term ended on June 21, following which he stepped down from the Union Council of Ministers. He had been inducted as Minister of State in June 2024 and assumed charge of his portfolios shortly after.
According to party sources, he was not renominated for the Rajya Sabha elections. While no official reason was provided, reports suggested it could be linked to electoral considerations in Kerala.
Following his resignation, Kurian expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying his ministerial role was made possible due to the Prime Minister’s leadership. He also stated that he had never expected to become a Union minister.
Kurian has been associated with the BJP since its early years and has held several positions within public life and governance. He previously served as Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities and as Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of Railways.
Born on September 20, 1960, in Kottayam district of Kerala, Kurian studied law and practised as an advocate before entering public service.
