Five people died and several others were injured after falling off an overcrowded train in Mumbai on Monday morning during the peak hours. The incident occurred between Diva and Kopar railway stations of the Central Railway.

According to preliminary reports, the mishap occurred when a local train heading towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) reportedly saw 10 to 12 commuters fall from its compartments.

The train was heavily overcrowded and passengers were hanging from the door when the incident occurred. The injured were recovered from the railway tracks and rushed to a hospital in Kalwa where five were declared dead.

The deceased passengers are reported to be between 30–35 years of age. The process to identify them is currently on.

Incidentally, the railway board announced on Monday that all rakes being manufactured for the Mumbai Suburban railway will have automatic door-closing facilities.

The board has also announced that all rakes in service will be redesigned and door closure facilities will be provided in all of them.
