A group of students allegedly kidnapped their own classmate in Bengaluru to fund a lavish lifestyle, in a incident that police attacked within hours.
The accused students, hailing from Bihar, Jamshedpur, Kerala, and Bengaluru, abducted a fellow student identified as Mohanty, a native of Odisha. According to police, the accused lured Mohanty out of his hostel, forced him into a car, and took him to one of their rooms. They then contacted his friends and demanded Rs 50,000 for his release.
Mohanty’s friends transferred Rs 10,000 and alerted police by dialling 112. Acting swiftly, Madiwala police tracked the accused using location details and rescued the victim. In a dramatic operation, police arrested all the accused within two hours.
Police have seized a fake metal gun, a knife, and the car used in the crime. Further investigation is underway.
DCP South East Mohammad Sujeetha M.S. said the victim was initially believed to have been kidnapped by unknown persons. However, the complaint later indicated that the suspects could be known to him, as they all belonged to the same college.
“Our investigation revealed that one individual lured the victim and took him to a location where he was held captive. The distress call was received between 8:30 pm and 8:45 pm, and the boy was rescued around 12:30 am to 1:00 am,” the DCP said.
She added that four individuals were involved in the kidnapping and had demanded money, confirming that it was a ransom-driven abduction. Police have registered an FIR and are continuing their investigation.
“We are also examining whether the accused have been involved in similar incidents in the past. As of now, we have evidence related to this particular case, but we are looking into the possibility of their involvement in other crimes as well,” she said.
