Threat emails warning of a possible major terrorist attack have been received, prompting Delhi Police, Uttarakhand Police and intelligence agencies to go on high alert, according to Delhi Police sources.

Sources said the emails name several temples, government offices and political leaders as potential targets, with Delhi Police now investigating the threat.

Intelligence agencies have also issued an alert covering several areas from Uttarakhand to Delhi. According to the alert, Khalistani terrorists could carry out a major attack in the coming days, targeting temples in Uttarakhand and Delhi, as well as government institutions, railway stations and police personnel.

The heightened security comes following the recent Nihang Sikh-Uttarakhand Police showdown in Uttarakhand, sources added.

Standoff Between Nihangs and Uttarakhand police

The standoff between Nihang Sikhs and the Uttarakhand Police has eased for now after the group, which had been demanding the release of four Nihangs arrested for allegedly injuring locals in an altercation in Chamoli, stepped back from the Himachal Pradesh-Uttarakhand border following assurances from the authorities.

The tensions began after the June 16 incident in Chamoli. On June 20, members of the group occupied a gurdwara in Nagarasu in Rudraprayag before leaving on June 23 after holding meditations.

A larger group later marched to Dehradun on June 25, reiterating its demand for the release of the arrested Nihangs. The ongoing mediation has since led to a thaw, with police assuring the group that allegations of partiality in the investigation would be examined.
