In a significant relief for nursing interns at the state-run Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital in Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday announced a steep 27-fold hike in their stipend. The announcement came on the occasion of International Nurses Day. The
CM Gupta also carried out a surprise inspection at the hospital, according to an official statement. She visited various wards, interacted with nursing staff, and reviewed healthcare facilities during the visit.
"Ending a 27-year wait, the Delhi government has approved a substantial hike in the stipend for nursing interns. The amount has been raised from Rs 500 to Rs 13,150. This decision has brought significant relief to 180 nursing interns," the statement said.
As many as 1,388 nursing officers and 41 paramedical staff members were also handed their appointment letters by the government with the aim of strengthening and expanding healthcare services in the national capital, it added.
During her interaction with hospital staff, the Delhi CM listened to nurses' experiences and acknowledged the challenges associated with the profession.
"Doctors provide treatment, but it is nurses who give patients emotional strength and care that often helps them heal," she said, adding that the patience and commitment shown by nurses in difficult circumstances is truly inspiring.
She also met healthcare workers from various states, including Kerala, Rajasthan, and Punjab, highlighting how professionals from across India have contributed significantly to Delhi’s healthcare infrastructure.
The Delhi CM asserted that her government is committed to improving the work culture for healthcare professionals and protecting their rights. "Respecting nursing staff, who work tirelessly day and night in the service of patients, was a shared responsibility of both the government and society," she said.
In a post on X, CM Gupta lauded the compassion and resilience displayed by nurses in the discharge of their duties, adding that they bring "comfort, confidence and hope" to countless lives every day.
Observed across the world annually on May 12, International Nurses Day recognises the vital role nurses play in healthcare and society.
