The list of countries supporting India's bid for a permanent United Nations Security Council seat covers United Nations member states and regional groups that have publicly endorsed India's campaign for permanent membership of a reformed United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
India is a founding member of the United Nations (joining in 1945 as British India) and has served eight two-year terms as an elected non-permanent member of the Council, most recently in 2021–22.[1] It campaigns jointly with Brazil, Germany and Japan in the G4 nations, whose members support one another's bids and have proposed expanding the Council from 15 members to 25 or 26.[2]
Four of the five existing permanent members—France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Russia—have publicly supported India's inclusion as a permanent member of an expanded Council. China has supported a greater Indian role at the United Nations, including in the Security Council, but has not issued an equivalent unconditional endorsement of a permanent Indian seat.[3][4]
Support is diplomatic rather than a formal United Nations vote. Under Article 108 of the UN Charter, any change in permanent membership requires an amendment adopted by two thirds of the United Nations General Assembly and ratified by two thirds of UN members, including all five permanent members.[5]
