The unrest in Noida is no longer confined to factory gates. In a terrifying escalation of the ongoing labor protests in the city, the luxury high-rise Cleo County in Sector 121 became a battlefield this week. A massive crowd of domestic helps gheraoed the society premises, with the situation turning violent as protesters reportedly shattered the glass doors of one of the buildings.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood, with nearby societies like Homes 121 quickly issuing safety advisories to their residents. While Noida has recently seen large-scale industrial protests, this shift to residential domestic help indicates a widening gap between the city’s workforce and its employers.
The sudden nature of the protest has residents and observers worried. Some claim the movement isn’t entirely organic. One user on X noted, “Something bad is going in Noida. This is not normal and some kind of planned event," linking it to the recent Phase 2 factory protests.
Others shared stories of intimidation within the worker community. A resident of a nearby society shared, “My maid says that many don’t want to be part of protest but some are trying to drag everybody."
The viral footage has sparked a massive debate online, reflecting the deep divide in how the city views its unorganised sector. Many believe the hike is long overdue. “Fully support these maids. They cant make even 7-8000 after 8 hours of work," one user wrote. Another added that the “drama" is actually a reaction to rising costs: “Salary ke liye drama nahi ho raha… That’s called inflation which Govt should take. Live their life for one day to understand."
On the flip side, some residents feel the tactics are exploitative. “Gathered in crowd is not always a protests, sometimes it’s extortion," argued one user. Another pointed out the lack of legal standing: “It’s an unorganised sector. Kaam karna hai karo warna jao. Maids cannot demand minimum wages until their jobs also come under the purview of labour laws."
With the glass doors at Cleo County shattered and tensions simmering across Sector 121, residents are calling for immediate police intervention. Many believe there is a “mastermind driving this behind the scenes" to capitalize on the city’s general atmosphere of unrest.
