A five-story building collapsed in Delhi’s Mehrauli, leaving at least nine dead, and six trapped as a rescue operation is underway.
A relative has also raised concern over the response from the officials, claiming that locals were handling situation better than police.
“The police are here, we are asking about our family members? There is no response. Local people were handling the situation better than the police. They rescued three people, but the police only rescued two people… No one has the answer to my questions. What is the meaning of freedom of speech? If leaders come, then only they do something. This building was being constructed at a risk, and we also complained. I want to see my mother, but they are not allowing me to go outside," she said.
As rescue operations continued at the site, Dr Jaswant, President of the Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG), said that two people were feared dead, though no official confirmation had been issued at the time.Earlier, police officials stated that nine individuals had been pulled out from the debris, while six others were still feared trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
South Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Anant Mittal said authorities responded immediately after receiving information about the incident. According to him, personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Delhi Fire Services, and Delhi Police have been jointly carrying out the rescue mission.
