Air India cabin crew was arrested at Kochi airport on Wednesday for smuggling gold. According to the officials, Shafi, a native of Wayanad was arrested by Customs officials at the airport with 1,487 grams of gold.

According to reports, the Customs Preventive Commissionerate had received confidential information that a cabin crew member of the Bahrain-Kozhikode-Kochi flight service was bringing in gold.

The accused is being interrogated by the officials.

The accused was reportedly planning to wrap the gold around his hands and cover the sleeve of the shirt and pass through the green channel.

Meanwhile, Air India Express has issued a statement saying that the accused staffer as been suspended with immediate effect.

"A member of the crew on an Air India Express flight IX 474 has been taken into custody following an incident involved smuggling. The said individual has been placed on suspension with immediate effect. Air India Express has zero tolerance for such behaviour and will be taking stern action against the individual including termination of service following receipt of the report from the investigative authorities," said the statement.

Earlier, on Wednesday, two passengers, who arrived from Singapore, were arrested at Chennai airport for carrying gold weighing 6.8 kg value at Rs 3.32 crores, Chennai customs reported.
