Three Indian Army officers survived a helicopter crash in Ladakh’s harsh mountainous terrain — and what followed has now become the internet’s definition of “aura”.

A Cheetah helicopter carrying a Lieutenant Colonel, a Major, and Major General Sachin Mehta, General Officer Commanding of the 3rd Infantry Division, crashed in the Tangste region near Leh on May 20. Officials confirmed the incident on Saturday.

The Lieutenant Colonel and the Major were piloting the single-engine helicopter, while Major General Mehta was travelling onboard as a passenger. All three officers sustained injuries in the crash.

But it wasn’t just the survival story that caught attention online.

Soon after the crash, a selfie of Major General Sachin Mehta with the two injured officers began circulating across social media. Sitting calmly on rocks beside the wreckage of the damaged helicopter, the officers appeared composed despite surviving what many are calling a near-impossible escape.

In a terrain where even routine flying is considered one of the toughest operational challenges in the world, the image quickly became symbolic of military composure under pressure.

No dramatic statements.
No panic.
Just three officers, moments after surviving a crash in one of the world’s most unforgiving regions.

Many online described the image as “pure Army aura” — not because of swagger, but because of the quiet calm often associated with soldiers operating in extreme conditions.

The incident has also once again brought focus to the ageing Cheetah helicopter fleet, which has served the Indian Armed Forces since the 1970s.

The Cheetah helicopters played a major role during Operation Meghdoot in 1984 in the Siachen Glacier and remain among the world’s most capable high-altitude helicopters. However, the fleet has also been linked to multiple crashes over the years, with several pilots losing their lives.

An official enquiry has now been ordered into the cause of the latest crash.

The ageing fleet is gradually being replaced by the indigenous Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The Army has reportedly already ordered six limited-series-production LUHs.

But for many people online, the story was no longer just about the helicopter.

It was about the image after the crash — bruised officers, a destroyed aircraft, the mountains of Ladakh in the background, and a calm selfie that somehow captured resilience, discipline and soldierly instinct in a single frame.
