Amul and Mother Dairy have increased milk prices by Rs 2 per litre across several variants from May 14, marking the first major revision in nearly a year. The hike comes amid rising procurement costs, more expensive cattle feed, higher transportation expenses and growing packaging costs. But the timing is also significant. With the ongoing West Asia conflict fuelling fears of crude oil supply disruptions and imported inflation, pressure is building across sectors that depend heavily on fuel and logistics, and the dairy industry is among the first to feel the impact.

For consumers, the concern is not just about paying a little more for milk. In India, milk sits at the centre of the everyday food economy. Once milk prices rise, the increase gradually spills over into paneer, curd, ghee, sweets, tea, coffee and restaurant food. And there is precedent for this.

In 2023, after Karnataka’s cooperative brand Nandini raised milk and curd prices, consumers also reported sharp increases in paneer prices, with some saying paneer rates had gone up by nearly Rs 30 per kg. This pattern is common because higher milk procurement costs eventually affect almost every dairy product.

A similar trend was visible in 2025 when GST cuts led dairy companies to reduce prices of paneer, ghee and butter alongside milk products, effectively showing how closely linked dairy pricing works in India. In other words, when milk prices move up or down, other dairy products usually follow.

Paneer Likely To Become Costlier First

Among dairy products, paneer is usually the first to feel the impact of higher milk procurement costs because producing paneer requires large quantities of milk. Roughly 8-10 litres of milk is needed to make 1 kg of paneer. As dairies start paying farmers more for raw milk, manufacturers and retailers gradually pass on the burden.

Restaurants, caterers and sweet shops are already dealing with rising electricity bills, refrigeration costs and transportation expenses. A fresh increase in milk prices could push paneer prices higher over the coming weeks.

That may eventually reflect in restaurant menus, tiffin services and even everyday household cooking.

Ghee Prices Could Also Rise

Ghee production is even more milk-intensive, making it highly sensitive to procurement costs. Traders say if fuel and packaging expenses continue rising alongside crude oil prices, ghee prices may also harden later this year.

This becomes especially important ahead of the festive and wedding season, when demand for ghee rises sharply across sweet shops and catering businesses.

Curd, Chaas And Lassi Under Pressure

Summer months usually see strong demand for curd, buttermilk and lassi, especially during heatwaves. Dairy companies often avoid sudden hikes in these products initially because they are consumed daily by millions of households.

But if milk procurement prices remain elevated for months, companies may eventually revise prices here too.

Small tea stalls, cafes and eateries that depend heavily on milk products are also likely to gradually pass on the increase to customers.

Sweet Shops May Feel The Heat

India’s sweets industry runs heavily on dairy. Khoya, paneer, cream and ghee form the base for products like gulab jamun, rasgulla, peda, kalakand, barfi, and rabri.

Sweet shop owners often delay price hikes for as long as possible because festive buyers are extremely price-sensitive. But sustained increases in milk and ghee prices eventually leave little room to absorb costs.

If dairy inflation continues, festive sweets may become noticeably more expensive this year.

How The West Asia Conflict Is Linked To Milk Prices

The tensions in the region have raised concerns over disruptions in oil supply routes, especially around the Strait of Hormuz. This disruption has pushed global crude prices higher. Meanwhile, milk pouch packaging depends heavily on petroleum-linked products like plastic film.

When crude oil prices rise due to geopolitical tensions, packaging material costs also increase. Amul has explicitly mentioned milk packaging film becoming more expensive.
