A domestic dispute at a home in Delhi's Nihal Vihar turned fatal on Saturday morning after a 31-year-old software engineer, Vinay Gupta, was allegedly assaulted by his in-laws following an argument with his wife over giving medicine to their infant child. Police have arrested four people in connection with the case, including Gupta's wife, Rekha, her two brothers and one sister-in-law.
According to the victim's family, the argument between Vinay and Rekha began over administering medicine to their child. During the dispute, Rekha reportedly left the house after contacting her family members. Around 10 minutes later, she returned with her two brothers, sister-in-law, father, uncle and other relatives at the couple's residence.
CCTV footage from the area reportedly captured Rekha wearing a red suit and her sister-in-law dressed in blue. The footage also purportedly showed Rekha's two brothers, her father and another man arriving in a car.
She reportedly tried to intervene and called for help, but the assault continued. The family has alleged that Vinay was strangled and repeatedly kicked and beaten on his chest.
The victim's relatives have also alleged that the attack was pre-planned. They claimed that Rekha switched off the CCTV cameras inside the house before the alleged assault. These allegations are part of the family's account, while the police investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events.
Soon after the alleged assault, a neighbour was seen carrying Vinay on his shoulder as he was being taken to hospital. Members of Rekha's family were also reportedly seen following them. Doctors at the hospital declared Vinay dead.
The couple lived on the third floor of the house, while Vinay's parents stayed downstairs. According to his family, Rekha cooked separately and there had been earlier disputes between the couple. They also alleged that her brother had previously threatened Vinay over minor disagreements.
