A 47-year-old professor at a medical college in Assam died after reportedly collapsing during a workout at a gym in Nagaon.
The CCTV footage of the incident showed Dr Sahin Rahman, an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at Nagaon Medical College and Hospital, exercising at the gym when he suddenly became unconscious at around 7.36 pm on August 27.
Rahman was rushed for medical attention but was later declared dead. The exact cause of his death has not yet been officially ascertained.
The incident comes amid several cases of people collapsing during workouts at gyms in recent years.
In June this year, a 38-year-old Special Operations Group (SOG) officer died after collapsing during a workout in Uttarakhand's Champawat district.
The officer, identified as Girish Bhatt, was working out at a local gym on Friday when he suddenly felt unwell and collapsed, officials said.
People at the gym rushed him to a private hospital in nearby Khatima, where doctors declared him dead.
On August 2 last year, 37-year-old businessman Milind Kulkarni collapsed while working out at a gym in Pune's Chinchwad area.
Kulkarni, who had reportedly been a regular at the gym for six months, was exercising when he took a short break and drank some water. He then felt dizzy and collapsed.
Gym staff and others rushed him to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
According to people close to the family, Kulkarni had a family history of heart disease, with both his father and brother having died of heart attacks.
The incidents have again brought attention to sudden deaths during or immediately after exercise, particularly among relatively young people.
Regular physical activity is considered important for cardiovascular health and reduces the long-term risk of heart disease.
However, strenuous exercise can, in rare cases, trigger a serious cardiac event, particularly in people with underlying or undiagnosed heart conditions.
