A bus carrying pilgrims from Pakistan to Iraq overturned in Iran's Yazd province, claiming the lives of at least 35 passengers, state-run Radio Pakistan reported. A total of 53 passengers were on the bus, most of them from the city of Larkana in Pakistan’s Sindh province.
According to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, the accident took place on Tuesday night.
A report by Pakistan's Dawn news said that at least 18 people were also injured in the accident. They were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and said that he is "gravely concerned about the safety and welfare of injured pilgrims."
“I have given instructions to our Ambassador in Tehran to ascertain the exact situation and provide swift medical relief and recovery services, as well as arrange the repatriation of dead bodies to Pakistan,” he stated in a post on X.
The pilgrims were on their way to Iraq to commemorate Arbaeen, marking the death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein, in the Battle of Karbala.
