A 47-year-old American citizen from Illinois travelled to Pakistan’s Upper Dir district to marry a local man she met on social media, according to a report. The woman, Mindy Rasmussen, reportedly became acquainted with Sajid Zeb Khan, 31, through Facebook nearly a year ago. The two developed a relationship over time, beginning with online chats and later progressing to video calls. Following months of communication, Mindy Rasmussen proposed marriage to Sajid Zeb Khan. Upon receiving approval from both families, she travelled to Pakistan to formalise the union.
Mindy Rasmussen arrived in Pakistan earlier this month on a 90-day visit visa. After reaching Islamabad International Airport, she was received by Sajid Zeb Khan, who welcomed her with flowers. She subsequently converted to Islam and adopted the name Zulekha.
The couple then travelled to Sajid Zeb Khan’s hometown in Upper Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where they were welcomed by local residents. According to local media reports, villagers expressed their hospitality by presenting gifts and holding celebratory gatherings in honour of the couple.
The marriage was solemnised through a traditional nikkah ceremony in accordance with Islamic customs. Local police officials and family confirmed that the marriage took place with mutual consent and in line with local traditions.
Mindy Rasmussen, now Zulekha, expressed appreciation for the welcome she received in Pakistan. “Pakistan is beautiful and peaceful," she said, adding that the kindness and hospitality shown to her had exceeded her expectations. She further said that her family in the United States, including her father, older sister and younger brother, were aware of her plans and had extended their support.
“They know I’m here and are excited for me," she said.
Zulekha spoke positively about her husband, describing him as “a loving and humble man" as she said that it was his sincerity and respect that strengthened their bond.
Sajid Zeb Khan said that his wife’s decision to convert and marry him was made independently, asserting, “She is an independent woman who can make her own decisions. We are getting married of our own free will." Zulekha also encouraged foreigners to visit Pakistan saying, “I encourage people to visit Pakistan and experience its rich culture, hospitality, and natural beauty."
