On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the account of his warm greetings on Ukraine’s Independence Day.

In a message shared among the masses on social media, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is counting on India’s support in bringing an end to the ongoing situation with Russia.

Zelenskyy said, “Now, as the entire world strives to end this horrible war with dignity and lasting peace, we count on India’s contribution.” He also underscored the important role of diplomacy in securing peace not only in Europe, but also in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

He acknowledged India’s constant commitment to peace and dialogues, while representing his country’s deep appreciation for India’s stance on resolving conflict through diplomatic channels.

Amid ongoing international efforts to de-escalate the war, India has maintained a neutral stance on the conflict while repeatedly urging for peaceful resolution and dialogue among the two countries.

Narendra Modi thanked the Ukrainian leader in a post on X on August 16, “Thank you President Zelenskyy for your warm greetings. I deeply value the joint commitment to forging even closer ties between India and Ukraine. We earnestly wish our friends in Ukraine a future marked by peace, progress and prosperity,” Modi wrote.

Earlier this month, President Zelenskyy had extended wishes to India on its Independence Day, celebrated on August 15. He expressed his hope that India would contribute globally to bring peace in the region.

India and Ukraine have historically enjoyed a cordial relation in areas converging with education and defence cooperation. Since the beginning of the war in February 2022, India has continued to engage with both Ukraine and Russia, advocating for dialogue and ceasing military escalation.
