The UAE is mourning the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who passed away on September 21, 2026.
The UAE Presidential Court expressed condolences to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and to the wider Al Maktoum family.
The Dubai Ruler’s Court has announced 10 days of official mourning, beginning September 21. During this period, flags will be flown at half-mast.
Sheikh Ahmed was a prominent member of Dubai’s ruling family and the brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
His public life stretched across military service, security, sports and business.
He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Britain in 1975 and later served in Dubai’s military and security establishments. He was also associated with Dubai Police and Public Security.
But his influence wasn't limited to public service.
Sheikh Ahmed was closely associated with horse racing and equestrian sport, including Jebel Ali Racecourse and Jebel Ali Stables.
He became a recognised owner and breeder, with horses competing in major races in Britain and Ireland. His racing interests included Mtoto, which won prestigious races including the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Eclipse Stakes.
He was also connected with Al Wasl Sports Club, having previously served as its chairman and president.
