US President Donald Trump said Iran had asked to continue talks with the United States but asserted that any ceasefire between the two countries had ended.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Iran had sought further negotiations, but said Washington had made its position clear.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue 'talks.' We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER! Thank you for your attention to this matter."
Trump signed off the statement as: President DONALD J. TRUMP.
The post comes amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran. Trump did not elaborate on the nature of the talks or provide further details about the ceasefire he referred to.
Earlier, speaking at a NATO summit in Turkey, Trump had indicated that the interim peace deal signed with Iran weeks ago was effectively over. Responding to a question about the memorandum of understanding (MoU), he said, "For me, the MoU is over. I don't want to deal with them anymore."
His remarks came hours after the United States launched fresh strikes against Tehran in retaliation for attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. At the summit, Trump also described Iran's leadership as "scum" and "sick people", reiterating that he no longer wanted to engage with Tehran.
The latest escalation follows weeks of strained ties despite the interim agreement aimed at ending hostilities. Iran has continued to leverage its strategic position along the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20 per cent of global energy supplies pass.
Oil prices rose more than 3 per cent following Trump's remarks, reflecting renewed concerns over regional stability.
