External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday met US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor in New Delhi amid continuing tensions over Washington’s decision to impose 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports.
Gor, who was joined by US Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas, is on a six-day visit to India. His trip comes shortly after the US Senate confirmed his appointment as the next envoy to New Delhi.
“Excited to welcome Ambassador Sergio Gor to India! He will meet with Indian government counterparts to discuss opportunities to further deepen our ambitious strategic partnership and promote a safer, stronger, and more prosperous relationshi," said the US embassy in India, announcing his arrival.
While neither side shared details of the discussions, it is understood that the talks were focused on efforts to ease recent strains and restore momentum in the bilateral relationship.
“Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance," Jaishankar said in a post on social media.
“Wish him the best for his new responsibility," he added.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also shared a picture of Gor meeting Vikram Misri, the foreign secretary. “They had a productive exchange on the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and its shared priorities. FS wished Amb-designate Gor all success for his assignment," Jaiswal said, sharing their photo.
Meanwhile the Indian Embassy on Friday hosted the envoy-designate for Diwali celebrations at India House in Washington DC.
Sharing the update on X, Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra wrote, “Pleasure to host Ambassador and Special Envoy to the President @SergioGor yesterday at India House for Diwali celebrations before his visit to India."
According to a US Embassy spokesperson, Ambassador Gor’s formal presentation of credentials and move to India will take place “at a later date that has not yet been determined."
