In a phone conversation with President Zelenskyy on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s stance as a pro-peace nation that will support efforts aimed at achieving restoration of peace at the earliest. He voiced India’s steadfast position of a prompt resolution of conflict, and affirmed the country’s commitment to contributing in every possible way to support peace efforts and further enhance bilateral relations with Ukraine.

During the diplomatic exchange, President Zelenskyy briefed Prime Minister Modi on the ongoing Russian attacks targeting Ukrainian cities and villages. He specifically drew attention to yesterday’s strike on the bus station in Zaporizhzhia, which resulted in dozens getting injured. He criticized the series of Russian attacks on the people of Ukraine and stated that despite opportunities for a peaceful resolution, Russia is continuing violence.

In a detailed and candid post on X, Zelenskyy said, “I informed about the Russian attacks on our cities and villages, about yesterday’s strike on the bus station in Zaporizhzhia, where dozens of people were injured in a deliberate Russian bombing of a regular urban facility. And this is at a time when there is finally a diplomatic possibility to end the war. Instead of demonstrating readiness for a ceasefire, Russia is showing only its desire to continue the occupation and killings.”

Furthermore, Zelenskyy urged India that any decisions taken at the ‘peace talks’ aren’t imposed on Ukraine. Rather, such peace efforts and everything concerning Ukraine must be made with the latter’s participation.

The conversation reached a significant point when the leaders discussed the international sanctions against Russia. President Zelenskyy stressed that Russian energy exports must be restricted, especially oil exports. The restrictions can limit Russia’s monetary security to continue the war.

Zelenskyy’s comments came in the light of U.S. President Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on countries importing oil from Russia, with effect from August 6.
