A fresh video released by Bangladeshi news broadcaster JamunaTV has captured the final moments of Hindu Bengali garment worker Dipu Chandra Das, who was lynched last week in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh region.
The video shows a mob gathering outside a large blue door, shouting and waiting as people on the other side prepare to open it and hand Dipu over. Moments later, Dipu is seen being taken away by the crowd.
Dipu was lynched following allegations that he had made indecent remarks about Islam. However, Bangladeshi authorities have said no evidence has been found to support the claims made by the mob.
According to Bangladeshi media reports, Dipu was stripped naked after the lynching, tied to a tree and set ablaze. Reports have also alleged that Dipu was handed over to the mob by police personnel along with his floor manager.
The video resurfaced on social media after it was shared by renowned author Taslima Nasrin, who was forced to flee Bangladesh after receiving threats from Islamist groups over her writings. Nasrin alleged that Dipu may have been targeted due to old enmity rather than any religious offence.
“Deepu Das was taken away directly from his factory by these Hindu-hating Muslims. Deepu had committed no crime. Rather, because of rumors spread by jihadist workers, the floor manager forced him to resign. And even though the manager knew that hungry vultures were waiting outside, he opened the door without informing the police. The vultures then tore him apart," Nasrin wrote on X while sharing the video.
In her commentary, Nasrin also referred to the case of Utshob Mondal, a Hindu youth who was detained by police in April 2024 over allegations of insulting Islam and taken to a police station in Khulna district in southwestern Bangladesh. According to Nasrin and rights activists, a hostile mob gathered outside the station later that night, demanding Mondal be handed over.
“What would have happened if the police had been informed! Do you remember Utshab Mondol? Utshab was brought to the police station, and outside a pack of ferocious hyenas was waiting. The police themselves ultimately handed Utshab over to the hyenas. Didn’t they gouge out Utshab’s eyes right in front of the police? Day by day, jihadists are increasing in the country. Day by day, hatred against Hindus is increasing. By trickery, persuasion, and strategy, they want to kill Hindus. They believe that by killing Hindus, the gates of heaven will open for them," Nasrin added.
The timestamp on the CCTV footage shows that the incident took place at around 8:30 pm (BST) on December 18. Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested 12 people so far in connection with the lynching and has said it has found no evidence to support claims that Dipu made any statement that hurt religious sentiments.
On Thursday night, Dipu Chandra Das, a worker at the Pioneer Knit Composite factory in the Dubalipara area of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh, was lynched by a mob. After killing him, the mob took Dipu’s body to the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway, stripped it naked and set it on fire.
