A US military aircraft landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport on Tuesday, drawing attention because of the unusual nature of the flight and the strained relationship between Washington and Moscow over the Ukraine conflict. The purpose of the aircraft’s visit remains unclear, and neither the US nor Russian governments has publicly explained why the plane travelled to Russia.
Flight data identified the aircraft by the callsign RCH4555 and registration 07-7181. It reportedly departed from Riga, Latvia, at around 8:50 am on Tuesday and arrived in Moscow shortly after 10 am. The aircraft had reached Riga on August 23 after previously departing from Camp Springs, Maryland, home to Andrews Air Force Base, a major US military facility associated with the transport of senior American officials.
The Kremlin told Reuters that it had no information about the aircraft. No statement had been issued by the US government explaining the flight or identifying its passengers or cargo.
The unusual flight comes amid renewed speculation about possible diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict. In recent weeks, reports have suggested that US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth could travel to Moscow as Washington seeks to inject momentum into stalled diplomacy.
US-Russia negotiations have faced significant obstacles, with differences remaining over the terms of a possible settlement. Reports have also indicated that the US and European officials have been working on a new proposal for Moscow.
The uncertainty surrounding the flight has also highlighted how closely unusual military movements are being watched amid the ongoing tensions between Russia and the United States. However, without confirmation from either government, the aircraft’s presence should not be taken as evidence of a new diplomatic breakthrough or a change in Washington’s or Moscow’s position on the Ukraine conflict.
The coming days could provide more clarity if either side releases information about the aircraft, its passengers or its cargo. Until then, the C-17’s unexpected journey from Riga to Moscow remains unexplained, leaving its exact purpose open to speculation.
