Germany's Lufthansa airline on Thursday announced that it has extended the suspension of flights to Tehran as speculation of Iranian retaliation on Israel raises concerns in the Middle East. Russia has also advised its citizens to refrain from travelling to the Middle East.
The region has been tensed after Iran vowed revenge for the April 1 airstrike on its embassy compound in Syria’s Damascus. The Israel strike killed a top Iranian general and six other Iranian military officers.
Lufthansa on Thursday said it had suspended flights to and from Tehran until probably April 13. A spokesperson for the airline said it had decided not to operate a flight from Frankfurt to Tehran last weekend to avoid the crew having to disembark to spend the night in Tehran.
Meanwhile, Israel, which is engaged in war in Gaza, said it is prepared for other scenarios as well. Iranian Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "We are preparing to meet the security needs of the State of Israel both in defence and attack."
