
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was seen having a diplomatic exchange with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on August 18, 2025. The External Affairs Minister told the Foreign Minister that troop withdrawal along the Line of Actual Control must “move forward’.
The discussions also established the foundation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to China for the SCO summit which is expected to occur later this month.
On August 19, Wang is set to meet National Security Advisor Ajit Doval for the 24th round of Special Representative talks that will specifically focus on resolving the Indo-China boundary dispute.
In a notable diplomatic gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet the Foreign Minister on Tuesday evening, ahead of his upcoming meetings with President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin. This meeting will mark their first interaction since October 2024 in Kazan. The gathering in Kazan was significant as both leaders reached an agreement to normalise relations after a four-year military standoff along the LAC.
Wang Yi’s visit is part of a broader effort to rebuild the bilateral ties which have had a history of multiple conflicts including the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes. Recent steps include the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in June. Furthermore, India has decided to renew its efforts to issue tourist visas for Chinese nationals.
Earlier on Tuesday, China’s Foreign Ministry expressed readiness to maintain “in-depth communication” with India. The ministry hopes to adopt a positive and constructive attitude for the same. Spokesperson Mao Ning added that the Special Representatives, Ajit and Wang Yi, aim to further deliberate on their dialogue regarding border management, cross-border cooperation and delimitation negotiations.
