Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to travel to New York in the coming days to attend the United Nations General Assembly, according to a report by Tasnim.

The US has approved visas for Pezeshkian, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other members of Tehran’s core delegation to attend the UN’s high-level meetings.

The decision comes as the US and Iran remain at war, while both sides continue efforts to end the conflict. If confirmed, this would mark the first meeting between the two presidents since the war began.

The UN General Assembly’s high-level week is scheduled to take place in New York from September 22 to 29, with the general debate beginning on September 22.

Visit Comes Am id US Iran Conflict

Pezeshkian’s visit comes against the backdrop of the continuing US-Iran conflict, which began after US and Israeli attacks on Iran earlier this year. The conflict has also affected the wider region, with concerns over shipping, energy supplies and regional security.

Washington and Tehran have also held intermittent talks aimed at ending the conflict, although reports indicate that no agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or resume negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme is close.

Iran Nuclear Issue Remains In Focus

The Iranian delegation is also arriving in New York as the UN faces renewed divisions over sanctions linked to Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Russia and China recently vetoed a US-backed Security Council resolution seeking to extend the mandate of UN experts monitoring sanctions on Iran. The sanctions themselves remain in place after European countries triggered the “snapback" mechanism in 2025.

Meanwhile, the US has imposed restrictions on the Iranian delegation during its New York visit, including travel limits and a ban on purchasing luxury goods.

Pezeshkian’s presence at the UN is therefore expected to put Iran’s war, nuclear programme and relations with the United States among the key issues surrounding this year’s General Assembly.
