Donald Trump just cannot stop harping on stopping wars brewing in regions to fulfill his dream of winning the Nobel Peace Prize that he missed out this year. For the umpteenth time, the US President on Monday repeated his long-standing claim that he brokered a ceasefire between nuclear arch-rivals India and Pakistan following their brief conflict in May.
Trump made the remarks while he was speaking during a ceremony on the Gaza peace deal that he brokered to end the two-year-old war between Israel and the Palestinian terror group Hamas. He said the US would build bridges of peace in several countries, including India and Pakistan.
"We will bridge Tel Aviv to Dubai, Haifa to Beirut, Israel to Egypt, Saudi Arabia to Qatar, India to Pakistan, Turkey to Jordan, UAE to Oman, and Armenia to Azerbaijan - another war that I settled," he said amid cheers from the Knesset members.
India and Pakistan were engaged in the worst military conflict in decades following New Delhi's Operation Sindoor strikes against Pakistani terror infrastructure on May 7 in retaliation against the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 civilian lives on April 22.
The two countries reached a ceasefire understanding on May 10, which Trump announced and said that he brokered it. India, on the other hand, refuted the claim, saying the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan called on his Indian counterpart and requested a stop to the hostilities.
Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who shares a warm relationship with Trump, refuted the US President's claim that Washington had no role in establishing truce between India and Pakistan. Yet, Trump has continued to make such claims.
Before leaving for Israel to oversee the release of the remaining 20 hostages by Hamas today, Trump claimed credit for averting a war between India and Pakistan. He doubled down on his claim, asserting that he threatened 200 per cent tariffs on India and Pakistan if the nuclear-armed rivals had not stopped fighting.
Dismissing claims that he did not seek a Nobel Prize for his peace efforts, the US President said he was "good at solving wars". He insisted that his diplomacy was aimed at saving lives, not winning awards.
Trump also declared the end of the Gaza war, calling the Israel-Hamas ceasefire the "eighth war" resolved during his presidency.
