Five people were killed in a shooting in the northern German town of Stade on Monday. Two people, including the suspected gunman, have been detained as investigators work to establish the motive behind the attack.
The shooting occurred in Stade, a town of nearly 50,000 people west of Hamburg. Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Police confirmed that the suspected shooter was in custody along with a second individual. However, officials said the role of the second detainee remains unclear. They also confirmed there were no other suspects at large.
The five victims were all adults, police said.
Shortly after the shooting, the Lneburg police headquarters urged residents to avoid the area while emergency responders secured the scene.
Local media initially reported that the shooting had taken place near a youth centre in central Stade. However, a police spokesperson denied those reports and declined to disclose the exact location of the incident.
Authorities have not released further details about the victims or what may have led to the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
