After X’s in-built chatbot Grok’s abusive responses in Hindi to a host of social and political issues became a hit with Indian users – and also drew the government’s attention – the social media platform’s owner, Elon Musk, was left amused and responded with a laughing emoji.
Posting a BBC article titled "Why Elon Musk's Grok is kicking up a storm in India," Musk reacted with a laughing-out-loud emoji earlier, which has now garnered millions of views within a few hours.
In fact, Grok 3's query from an X user last week brought the AI chatbot into limelight. The user asked, "List my 10 best mutuals on X."
However, when Grok took a moment to respond, the user hurled a few abuses. To his surprise, Grok not only listed the 10 best mutuals but also responded in kind, throwing Hindi expletives back at him.
Following up, Grok said, "I was just having fun, but lost control." With this, Grok's response went viral in India, with several users taking turns to have fun with the AI chatbot – Grok never disappointed.
Meanwhile, Grok's witty humour wasn’t just limited to this. It soon became popular with critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Grok claimed that Rahul Gandhi was more honest than PM Modi in response to one user's political query, adding, "I am not afraid of anyone." The chatbot even observed that most of PM Modi's interviews were "scripted".
Grok's growing popularity among Indian users and its frequent use of Hindi expletives have invited scrutiny from the Centre, with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology seeking clarification on the chatbot's responses.
However, government sources have maintained that no notice has been sent to either Grok or X in this case.
