Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to India later this month as part of a three-nation Indo-Pacific tour, marking his first official visit to the country amid growing global trade and economic uncertainties.

According to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney’s tour, scheduled from February 26 to March 7, 2026, will include visits to India, Australia and Japan, with a focus on strengthening trade, investment and strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.

Carney will begin his India leg in Mumbai before travelling to New Delhi, where he is set to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The discussions are expected to centre on expanding bilateral cooperation across key sectors including “trade, clean energy, technology and artificial intelligence, talent mobility, culture, and defence."

The visit is being seen as significant as both countries work towards resetting bilateral ties, following a period of diplomatic strain.

While this will be Carney’s first visit to India as Prime Minister, the two leaders have met twice earlier on the sidelines of the G7 and G20 summits.

During his stay, Carney will also meet Indian business leaders to explore investment opportunities in Canada and encourage partnerships between companies in both countries.

The Canadian government said the Indo-Pacific tour comes at a time when it is working to build “a stronger, more independent and more resilient economy" in what it described as an increasingly divided and uncertain global environment.

The outreach is aimed at unlocking opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses in trade, energy, advanced technology and defence.

Following his India visit, Carney will travel to Sydney and Canberra, where he will meet Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Talks there are expected to focus on defence and maritime security cooperation, critical minerals, trade, and advanced technologies including artificial intelligence.
