Jakarta, Indonesia: An explosion near a school in Indonesia's capital of Jakarta has injured 54, said the police. The blast reportedly happened in a mosque inside the school complex in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta during Friday prayers. The immediate cause of the incident is not yet known.
Witnesses said they heard two loud blasts just as the sermon began. Panic quickly followed as worshippers ran for safety while thick grey smoke filled the mosque.
According to Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri, most of the victims suffered wounds from flying glass and debris. While many were treated and discharged from nearby hospitals, around 20 students are still receiving medical care. Three of them are reported to be in serious condition.
"The initial data we have received indicates that there are approximately 54 individuals affected. Some have minor injuries, some moderate, and some have already been discharged," said police chief Asep Edi Suheri.
According to Suheri, the anti-bomb squad that was rushed to the site found toy rifles and a toy gun near to the mosque.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the explosion. However, early reports suggest the blasts came from the area near the mosque’s loudspeaker system. An anti-bomb squad dispatched to the site later discovered toy rifles and a toy gun near the scene.
