At least five people were killed, and several others were wounded in a bomb blast at a mosque in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, the Associated Press reported.

According to senior police officer Abdul Rashid, the blast took place in Akkora Khattak district of northwestern Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Those dead and injured have been taken to hospitals for treatment as authorities investigate the incident, he added.

Jamia Haqqania, the mosque where the blast took place, is a seminary known for links with the Afghan Taliban. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The attack was orchestrated ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. It starts either this Saturday or Sunday depending on the sighting of the moon.
