Satellite images released by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have shed new light on the massive avalanche or landslide believed to have triggered the devastating flash floods in Nepal on August 25.

A preliminary analysis by ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) has identified extensive changes on the surface of a glacier located near the Trishuli river, close to the Nepal-Tibet border.

The region is believed to be linked to the source of the floodwaters that surged downstream, causing widespread destruction.

Before-and-after images show major landscape change

The satellite imagery released by NRSC provides a clear comparison of the area before and after the disaster. The affected glacier zone appears significantly altered in the post-event imagery.

A large grey-coloured patch can be seen in the “after” image, indicating the area impacted by the avalanche or landslide. The affected zone is considerably larger than what was visible in the corresponding pre-event image.

The satellite observations offer an important visual indication of the scale of the geological and glacial disturbance in the region.

Avalanche believed to have triggered floodwaters

Preliminary assessments suggest that a major avalanche involving ice, rock and debris may have caused a sudden release of water, sending a destructive surge through the river system.

The exact sequence of events is still being examined by authorities and scientists. Satellite imagery is expected to play an important role in determining the source of the flood and understanding how the landscape changed during the event.

The August 25 floods caused extensive damage in northern Nepal, with the disaster occurring in the mountainous region near the Tibet border.

Further analysis of satellite data and on-ground assessments will help establish the precise cause and scale of the avalanche and its role in the deadly floods.
