Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has approached the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash a criminal case registered against him over his recent remarks and imitation related to the daiva portrayal in the film Kantara. The case was filed following objections to his comments, which some alleged were inappropriate.

In his petition before a bench led by Justice M. Nagaprasanna, the actor argued that his statements were intended as genuine appreciation of Rishab Shetty’s performance and the film’s characterisation.

His legal team contended that his praise has been wrongly interpreted and given a criminal angle. The petition also mentioned that the police have already issued two notices to him in connection with the matter, adding that he is facing unnecessary pressure.

During the hearing, the court questioned the request made by Singh’s counsel for an urgent and immediate listing of the case.

Justice Nagaprasanna asked whether the matter should be taken up urgently simply because the petitioner is a Bollywood star and remarked whether similar urgency would be expected if the applicant were a Hollywood actor.

The court declined the plea for a same-day hearing and chose to follow its regular procedure. The matter has now been scheduled for hearing Tuesday.
