At just 16, Owen Cooper has made history. The rising star of Netflix’s Adolescence captured the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series on Sunday night, setting a record as the youngest winner ever in the category. Cooper surpasses Chris Colfer, who was 20 when he won for Glee in 2010.
“Standing here at the Golden Globes does not feel real whatsoever. What an incredible journey me and my family has been put through," Cooper said during his acceptance speech, drawing laughter and applause. “We are forever grateful for what these people have done for me and my family."
He reflected on his early experiences in acting, noting that he was the only boy in his drama class. “It was embarrassing," he admitted, “but I got through it." Cooper added that he continues to learn from the more experienced actors around him.
The Netflix miniseries Adolescence has already brought Cooper significant recognition. He previously won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, making him the youngest male acting winner in Emmy history. His role as Jamie Miller has also earned him the Critics’ Choice Award, the Gotham TV Award, and a SAG-AFTRA nomination.
At the Golden Globes, Cooper competed against Ashley Walters (Adolescence), Billy Crudup (The Morning Show), Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus), Tramell Tillman (Severance), and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus).
Adolescence continues to rack up accolades. Alongside Cooper’s Golden Globe win, the series earned nominations for Best Television Limited Series, Best Supporting Actress (Erin Doherty), and Best Actor (Stephen Graham). At the Emmys, it also took home awards for Best Limited Series, Best Actor (Graham), and Best Supporting Actress (Doherty).
This year, Adolescence garnered a total of five Golden Globe nominations. Cooper and Walters were nominated in their respective supporting categories, while Graham and Doherty competed for individual honors, and the show itself vied for Best Limited Series.
The Supporting Actor in a Television Series category spans multiple genres, including comedy, drama, and limited series. Last year, the award went to Shogun star Tadanobu Asano.
The 83rd Golden Globes were hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser and aired live from the Beverly Hilton on CBS. Dick Clark Productions produced the telecast, with Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner serving as executive producers.
