Though sorrowful, the day is also viewed as the beginning of hope, as it sets the stage for Easter Sunday, which celebrates Jesus' resurrection.
Good Friday marks the day Jesus Christ was crucified on a wooden cross after being accused of calling himself the "King of the Jews" — an act seen as rebellion against the Roman Empire. Despite being innocent, Jesus accepted his fate and was crucified to atone for the sins of mankind.
This day is a symbol of selfless sacrifice, forgiveness, and unconditional love. Christians believe that Jesus' death opened the gates of salvation for all. His suffering and death on the cross are remembered not with celebration, but with reverence, sorrow, and spiritual contemplation.
Across the world, churches hold special services on Good Friday. Devotees participate in prayers, fasting, silent reflection, and adoration of the cross. Many believers wear black clothes to mourn the death of Jesus and refrain from festivities. The focus is on repentance, reflection, and understanding the spiritual meaning of sacrifice.
In India, churches observe the Three Hours' Agony service — from 12 pm to 3 pm — symbolizing the time Jesus hung on the cross. Believers read passages from the Bible recounting the events of the crucifixion and meditate on Christ’s last words.
So while Good Friday 2025 is a day of grief, it is also a day of hope and faith. It reminds us of the light that follows darkness, and how selfless love can transform lives. That is why, even in death, the day is called “Good”.
