On 21st May 1991, Rajiv Gandhi, Former Prime Minister of India, is assassinated. He was an Indian politician and a government official who rose to become the leader of the Congress Party and served as Prime Minister of India (1984–89) after the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi, in 1984. The assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, occurred as a result of a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, in Tamil Nadu, India. At least 14 others, in addition to Rajiv Gandhi, were killed. It was carried out by Thenmozhi Rajaratnam (also known as Kalaivani Rajaratnam or Dhanu), a member of the Sri Lankan separatist organisation Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Of the five-member squad behind the assassination, Nalini Sriharan was the only one who was caught alive and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
