Stylish strokeplay meets steely nerve – The Shreyas Iyer Story. Year was 2014, a classy aggressive white hooded debutant, young boy who just waved his bat in the air with the two centuries and six half centuries on the board a name of an emerging player who just scored 809 runs in the 10 matches. The highest? 153. This is not just a score, it's a declaration of his skills, mindset too.

Domestic to International - The cup from the ideal.

In the year 2017, a debutant boy got a cap from Rohit Sharma in the valleys of Dharamshala scoring 88 runs in 70 balls, that is the story of Shreyas Iyer ODI debut. After the fiery debut in the year 2017, He got his test cap from his ideal Virat Kohli to debut against New Zealand  In the first innings, he score 105 runs a century on the debut second inning follow up with a 65 he became the first Indian to score a century and a half century in his debut test match awarded with “Man of the Match” from his all round batting powers - a pure representation of wrist power and skill.

Shreyas is not a constant fixture that we see in the Indian squad in the year of 2017 to 2021. That is influenced with his performances, form, fitness and the BCCI policies his graph is up and down in these following years. After his performance in the test debut he got many fair chances to show his pure class from the fielding effort to the classy sixes showcasing the power of  his muscles and class of wrist. The question of playing a short ball delivery is raised in this year. Loose his wicket on many short pitch deliveries. The question was even asked during the interviews by the media persons. He answered them with thunderous pull shots, turning that supposed flaw into a statement of his strength. It’s not just wrist work, it’s willpower in motion.

IPL Journey - Birth of a captain and a leader

The highest paid, uncapped player at the 2015 auction table started with the base price of 10 lakhs to the auction price of 2.6 crore INR by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). Delhi went all-in for the emerging 20 year old Mumbai batter and he delivered that, winning the award of emerging player of the season, scoring 430 runs in just 14 T20 matches. Shreyas was the youngest captain in the IPL history, as Delhi removed Gautam mid season due to his poor results. He scored 93 runs in just 40 balls while captaining his first match,  With the strike rate of 232.5 - absolute fire. Let Delhi Daredevils to the playoffs after 7 years in 2019, even in the finals in the 2020 loss to the Mumbai Indians. This emerging captain has been replaced by Rishabh Pant during his shoulder injury picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2023 auction and made their captain. Missed the IPL 2023 due to back injury. In the year of 2024, he led KKR to an ipl title breaking a 10 year drought for the team not just as a player but as a captain. Drop by KKR in 2024, even as an IPL winning captain. Punjab Kings picked up SHREYAS IYER in the ipl 2025 in the mega auction for a jaw dropping price of 26.75 crore making him the second highest paid player in the ipl history at that point.

Punjab gave him the love the tag of Sarpanch, made him the leader of the team that is leading from the front led Punjab to their second finale after 18 years with a team of uncapped players. Showcase his tremendous skill of captaincy and leadership, as well as a player becoming the highest scorer of the team.

The Injuries to the story of comeback - 

Against England in Pune on March 23, 2021, Shreyas Iyer suffered from a shoulder injury while diving at the extra cover in the eighth over to prevent a boundary, he partially dislocated his left shoulder the injury went severe enough that scans had eventually led to the surgery, ruled him out of the IPL 2021 season. Later got a back injury, missed the final test against Australia (Border - Gavaskar Trophy) and IPL 2023 diagnosed with a requiring bulging disk in the spine. From the shoulder injury to back injury, that threatened his career to a comeback that went unsung by many fans, Shreyas has lived through every shade of a cricketer’s journey.

Got a chance to regain and rebuild his career in the 2023 World Cup playing at the number 4 position in the Indian Squad. He showed up big and became the first-ever to cross 500 runs in the history of ICC World Cup, playing at number 4. Showcasing his versatility and fire power sixes,  down the order hit a century in the Wankhede against a strong team of New Zealand in the semi finals of the pressure match. The backbone of India's middle order scoring 2 centuries and 3 half centuries. 

Later lost his central contract, for not playing Ranji. Shreyas claimed that he's suffering from a back injury, but the BCCI report shows that he is fit to play. Bounce back and lift back-to-back domestic trophies Ranji, SMAT, & Irani cup by leading the team from the front in the year 2024. He's living every shade of a cricketer's journey that is rebuilding his career. Shreyas Iyer is not just playing cricket, he is living every movement of that field. In 2024, he led KKR to an IPL title, breaking a 10-year drought for the team — not just as a player, but as a captain. 

Selected in the Indian squad of 2025 Champions Trophy, Shreyas Iyer is ready to set another benchmark for himself. Became the second highest run scorer of the world champions trophy a played a crucial knock in staying in the middle order in the finale against New Zealand over 48 runs in 62 balls. Picked by Punjab Kings in 2025, and he just ended their wait of 18 to be in the final -  The magical yet aggressive captain Shreyas Iyer.
