New Delhi: Hockey India has defended its decision to introduce a predominantly saffron playing jersey for the Indian men's and women's teams ahead of the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, saying the move was made purely on technical grounds following recommendations from players, coaches and support staff.
The new jersey, unveiled earlier this week, sparked widespread debate on social media, with many fans questioning the replacement of India's iconic blue kit. Former India captain Viren Rasquinha was among the strongest critics, describing the decision as "embarrassing" and arguing that the blue jersey has long been an integral part of Indian hockey's identity.
Responding to the criticism, Hockey India said the decision was taken after extensive consultations with the team.
"The decision to change the uniform colour was based on support staff and players' recommendations and detailed consultations with them. The primary consideration was technical," the federation said in an official statement.
According to Hockey India, the traditional blue jersey often blended with the blue synthetic hockey turf that is now standard at international venues, making it difficult for players to distinguish teammates during fast-paced matches. To improve visibility, the coaching staff and players suggested alternative colours, including yellow and saffron, with saffron eventually being selected.
The federation also noted that saffron is one of the three colours of the Indian national flag and symbolises courage, sacrifice and national pride. However, it maintained that the primary reason behind the change was improved on-field performance rather than aesthetics or symbolism.
Hockey India further pointed out that changes to the national team's jersey are not unprecedented. India had worn a predominantly yellow kit during the 2014 Hockey World Cup before adopting a redesigned sky-blue jersey for the 2018 edition, with kit colours evolving over time to meet functional requirements.
The jersey controversy comes just weeks before India begins its campaign at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands. Led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, the team will be aiming to end a 51-year wait for a second men's Hockey World Cup title.
