Assam Police have arrested two of the late singer Zubeen Garg’s bodyguards, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya. Both men, who had been working with the singer for seven years, are Assam Police personnel.
The number of arrests in the case has now risen to seven. Reports indicate that more than one crore transactions were recorded from their bank accounts over the past couple of years.
Bora and Baishya were not part of Zubeen Garg’s Singapore entourage and had remained in Assam while the others travelled.
Earlier, amid the ongoing investigation of Garg’s death, his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, on Thursday said that the late singer had given some money to his two personal security officers (PSOs).
Garima said that Zubeen had given some money to the PSOs for the social work he does, news agency PTI reported.
“Besides, investigations are going on. The PSOs have all the bank statements, and they also maintained a diary about various transactions," she said as quoted by the news agency.
Garima said she was not aware of her husband’s financial transactions and “so this question should not be asked to me". “The issue should not be politicised. We just want to know what happened to him on that day (of his death)," she said.
Following Garima’s remarks, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya were suspended after the Assam SIT found huge financial transactions, worth over Rs 1.1 crore, from their accounts.
According to CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, the police found financial irregularities in their bank accounts, with one PSO’s account showing Rs 70 lakh and the other’s Rs 45 lakh, which are much more than their known sources of income, and this is why they were suspended.
“We found financial irregularities in their bank accounts. One PSO’s account shows Rs 70 lakh, while Rs 45 lakh was detected in the other’s account," PTI quoted Gupta as saying.
Zubeen Garg died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore on September 19 while swimming in the sea. He had gone to the Southeast Asian nation to attend the 4th edition of the North East India Festival.
