Parliament Winter Sessions: Parliament opens amid tensions over voter roll revisions, security concerns and a heavy legislative agenda awaiting intense debate.

Parliament Winter Session: The Winter Session of Parliament begins today. Questions over the revision of voter lists, concerns about the death of an election official in Bengal, and rising anxiety after the recent Delhi blast are expected to dominate the early days of the session.

Opposition push for debate on SIR: A major point of contention is the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties, particularly the Trinamool Congress, have demanded a detailed discussion on the process. They argue that the revision is being carried out without proper planning and has placed undue pressure on Election Commission staff, especially after the death of an official in Bengal. Leaders from 36 parties raised the issue during the all-party meeting and insisted that Parliament must address the concerns urgently.

Delhi blast: Alongside the electoral roll controversy, Opposition parties also want a debate on the 10 November Delhi blast and the wider questions of national security that have followed. The incident has added to the already charged political climate, with several parties urging the government to provide clarity on the investigation and preventive measures.

14 bills to be discussed: Despite these flashpoints, the government is preparing to push ahead with a packed legislative schedule. The session, running until 19 December, will include 15 sittings and the introduction of 14 bills. Key proposals include the Atomic Energy Bill, the Higher Education Commission of India Bill, and major amendments to corporate, insurance, excise, and arbitration laws. A financial bill on health and national security cess is also expected.

With both the government and the Opposition preparing to take firm positions, the coming weeks are likely to be marked by sharp exchanges and heavy legislative activity.
