Foreign ministry official jumps to death in Delhi, suffered from depression

The officer, who was suffering from depression and undergoing treatment, jumped from the terrace of his residential building in the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) residential society at around 6 am.

A senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer allegedly died by suicide on Friday morning in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri. The officer has been identified as Jitendra Rawat.

Rawat, who was suffering from depression and undergoing treatment, jumped from the terrace of his residential building in the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) residential society at around 6 am.

He lived on the first floor of the building with his mother. His wife and two children reside in Dehradun.

According to a Delhi Police source, "Rawat was troubled for the past few days. No suicide note has been found."

Following the incident, the Ministry of External Affairs released a statement confirming the officer’s demise.

“An officer of the Ministry of External Affairs passed away in the morning of March 07, 2025 in New Delhi. The Ministry is providing all possible assistance to the family, and is in touch with the Delhi Police. The Ministry stands with the family in this hour of grief and difficulty.” the statement by the ministry said.

The statement added that further details into the matter are not being released bearing in mind the need to respect the family’s privacy in this time of bereavement.
