Chandigarh mayoral elections postponed, AAP says 'BJP was going to face defeat'

JJ News Desk

Chandigarh mayoral elections have been postponed after the presiding officer fell sick, according to a Congress leader. However, there was no official word on postponing the mayoral polls.

Aam Aadmi Party's senior leader Raghav Chadha said they will approach Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding the postponment of polls. The AAP leader also accused the BJP of delaying the polls as the latter was "going to face defeat".

"With 20 out of the total 36 votes in its favour, the INDIA alliance is poised to win the Chandigarh Mayoral Elections. The BJP is all set to lose badly. This has given the BJP sleepless nights and forced its dirty tricks department to work overtime," Chadha said.

The AAP leader further said, "Is our democracy so weak that elections will only happen when the BJP is winning, and elections will be adjourned if the BJP loses?"

Senior Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal on Thursday claimed that they have been informed that elections will “not take place today” as the presiding officer has fallen sick.

“It has been informed that elections will not take place today as the presiding officer has fallen sick,” said Bansal, as he also accused the BJP of not allowing the polls to take place, as reported by news agency PTI.

The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party -- both INDIA bloc members –have joined hands to contest the mayoral elections.
