The Election Commission has filed a case against BJP MP Tejasvi Surya for posting a video on X (formerly Twitter) and soliciting votes on the grounds of religion, said the Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka on Friday.

Tejasvi Surya, who is seeking re-election from the Bengaluru South seat, said on Thursday that although the BJP has 80 per cent of people who support the party, only 20 per cent vote for it and while the Congress only has 20 per cent of people who support the party, 80 per cent vote for the party.

The BJP MP is in the fray in the second phase of voting held on Friday, April 26, and had asked people of his constituency to vote in record numbers.

Voting is underway for 14 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka out of the total 28 and a voter turnout of 50.93 per cent was recorded till 3 pm.

In the Bengaluru South seat, Surya is taking on former Jayanagar MLA and Congress leader Sowmya Reddy, the daughter of state Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. Bengaluru South, which has been a bastion of the BJP since 1996, saw Surya winning the seat in the 2019 polls by a margin of over three lakh votes.
