Ahmednagar to be renamed 'Ahilyanagar', Maharashtra approves proposal

JJ News Desk

Maharashtra's 'Ahmednagar' will be renamed 'Ahilyanagar' after the 18th century Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar. The Maharashtra Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal to rename the city.

The government's proposal to rename the city was first announced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in May last year.

The name of Ahmednagar city was derived from Ahmed Nizamshah, who founded the Nizamshahi dynasty and Ahmednagar town in the 15th century.

In 2022, the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad were changed to Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv respectively.

Aurangabad and Osmanabad were named after Mughal emperors Aurangzeb and Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan.
