As the Delhi Police have intensified a search operation to arrest Amanatullah Khan, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Okhla denied he was on the run and claimed to be implicated in a false case.
He made the remarks in a letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner a day after a case was registered against the Okhla MLA for allegedly obstructing a police operation to arrest an accused in a murder case.
"I am in my Assembly constituency, I am not in hiding. The person whom the Delhi Police came to arrest is out on bail. The police is implicating me in this false case to hide their mistake," the MLA, who won the Okhla seat for a third time in the February 5 Assembly polls, claimed in the letter.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have intensified its search operation to arrest Amanatullah Khan. Besides a dozen locations in Delhi, joint raids by the police and special cells teams were also being conducted in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
The police have claimed that the AAP leader's phone was switched off immediately after the complaint was registered against him in connection to the case.
Without taking any names, the police said that some people were helping Amanatullah Khan to hide.
The case pertains to Shahbaz Khan, who is facing an attempt-to-murder charge. As officers from Delhi Police Crime Branch took him into custody from Jamia, Amanatullah Khan intervened and questioned the legitimacy of the arrest. The MLA insisted that the individual was not a criminal.
As the confrontation escalated, Shehbaz Khan managed to flee and has been on the run ever since.
Meanwhile, other serious allegations have surfaced against the Okhla MLA, accusing him of threatening and pushing police officers during the heated exchange, sources said.
