Two people died after a massive tree fell on a group of tourists in Bali’s famed Monkey Forest on Tuesday. A chilling video of the incident, which occurred amid strong winds and heavy rain, has left the internet shocked.

The incident occurred at Ubud’s Scared Monkey Forest Sanctuary, a popular destination known for its serene ambiance and macaques.

The victims were identified as tourists from France and South Korea, while another South Korean woman sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalised in Ubud, according to local reports.

The video which shows the moment of the chaos has since gone on social media. In the footage, visitors were seen fleeing as the towering tree came crashing down on the pathway. Among the tourists was a toddler in a stroller.

According to Bali Post, Ubud police chief Gusti Nyoman Subarsana said his team swiftly evacuated the area following the incident. Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the cause, as weather conditions at the time likely played a role.

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary spans 12.5 hectares and is home to over 1,200 long-tailed macaque monkeys. Known for its strict guidelines, the site warns visitors against direct interaction with the monkeys, bringing food items, or engaging in behaviours that could provoke the animals.
