A Class 12 student was allegedly gang-raped by over 20 men in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi between March 29 and April 4. UP Police have registered an FIR against 23 men, 11 of whom are unidentified. Six men have been detained by the police so far.

The woman went missing when a friend took her to a hookah bar in the Pishachmochan area of Varanasi on March 29.

According to the police, the victim was preparing for admission to a sports course and regularly went to UP College for running practice. “As per her statement, on March 29, a friend took her to a hookah bar in the Pishachmochan area, where other men also joined. The girl alleged that she was drugged with a spiked cold drink and then taken to different hotels in the Sigra area, where she was gang-raped,” senior police official said.

Some of the accused were known to her -- acquaintances from Instagram and former classmates. Following a complaint from the girl's family, police located her and also began questioning staff at the hookah bar. CCTV footage from the location is being examined as part of the investigation.

According to DCP Varuna Zone Chandra Kant Meena, “The girl had initially left willingly with her friend. A missing person report was filed by her family on April 4, and she was found the same day. At that time, no complaint of sexual assault was made by her or her family.”

A complaint was received at Lalpur police station on April 6 regarding the gangrape incident, which allegedly took place between March 29 and April 4.

Based on the complaint, an FIR under relevant IPC sections was registered. DCP Meena also clarified that contrary to some media reports, the girl is not a minor.

Legal proceedings are underway.
